Students from Gainesville High School recently participated in a Junior Achievement job shadow day that included a stop at Brenau University's department of communication. Students saw radio and video aspects at Brenau. Eric Skipper, a professor at Gainesville State College, has been named Outstanding Spanish Professor for 2010 by the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Skipper’s research interests include studies of the Mexican connections in the works of John Steinbeck and Laura Esquivel.

He has presented numerous foreign language conference sessions on unique aspects of learning in the works of Spanish writers as well as analytical studies of the special challenges faced by today’s students in the foreign language classroom.

Jessie Grier, daughter of Gary and Tammy Grier of Gainesville, has been named to the president’s list for the fall 2009 semester at Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro.

To be eligible for this honor, students must earn a 4.0 GPA.

Patrick Shuler, a creative writing/literature double major at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, was recently named a co-winner in the Roy F. Powell Awards for Creative Writing. Shuler, of Gainesville, won for his fictional work, "Leaving the Living Room."

Marie St. Germain, a senior at Agnes Scott College, received a top award in the college’s 2010 Resume Exhibit.

The Flowery Branch resident is the daughter of Mariette and Martial St. Germain.

McKenzie Rose Jackson of Flowery Branch has been named to the dean’s list at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., for the fall 2009 semester. To achieve this honor, a student must achieve a GPA of at least 3.5.
