A Gainesville woman trying to cross a busy Green Street at the post office Friday morning was struck by a car and later hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Carol Chester, 67, was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center to be checked for a possible head injury, Gainesville Police Lt. Gary Entrekin said.

Chester was crossing in the northbound lane of Green Street shortly after 10 a.m. Friday when she was struck by a 2001 Buick Park Avenue driven by Marion Steele of Gainesville. Steele was exiting the post office parking lot and watching for traffic on her left and didn’t see the pedestrian, Entrekin said.

Chester was not walking in a designated crosswalk.

No citations were issued.

Green Street was temporarily blocked while police and emergency medical technicians responded.

As of late Friday, Chester was in fair condition, hospital officials said.
