Sewerage spill affects Flowery Branch subdivision

POSTED: January 29, 2010 10:24 a.m.
A grease blockage at a sewer line in a Flowery Branch subdivision caused a sewerage spill of about 1,000 gallons, some of which poured into Flowery Branch Creek, officials said.

City Manager Bill Andrew said today that the spill occurred about 3:30 p.m. Thursday at a manhole about 150 yards from the Victoria Court cul-de-sac.

City workers spread lime and took other appropriate containment measures and notified the state Environmental Protection Division, Andrew said.

Andrew said the neighborhood has a history of grease blockages with the cold weather contributing to the problem. He urged the area's sewer users to not pour cooking oils down their sinks as they can congeal and cause problems.
