Lady Yellow Jackets get road ACC win

POSTED: January 28, 2008 5:02 a.m.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Janie Mitchell finished with 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Georgia Tech (16-2, 3-1 ACC) to a win over NC State (12-6, 0-3) Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets earned their first Atlantic Coast Conference road win of the season.

The Jackets held a 10-point lead with two minutes remaining in the game but a fierce NC State comeback cut the margin to 66-63 with 36 seconds on the clock. Jacqua Williams knocked down three-of-four free throws down the stretch to help Tech hold on for the victory.

"What a great win for our kids," head coach MaChelle Joseph said. "I thought we were tough when we needed to be. Our seniors and upperclassmen made plays when they needed to. Our experience early in the season, playing on the road, made a difference tonight."

Tech forced NC State into a season-high 34 turnovers on the night, scoring 23 points off the Wolfpack mishaps. The Jackets finished with 17 steals with seven players garnering two or more in the game.

Chioma Nnamaka scored 16 points and was four-of-eight from beyond the arc. Jill Ingram added 10 points and three steals off the bench for Tech.

NC State got 15 points and 14 rebounds from Khadijah Whittington and a game-high 19 points from Shayla Fields.

The Wolfpack jumped out of the gate quickly to take a seven-point advantage but Tech was able to battle back. With the score tied at 16, the Jackets went on a 12-0 run and entered the locker room with a 30-23 lead. The first half was marred with numerous turnovers from both teams but the Jackets held a distinct advantage off the bench, outscoring NC State 14-0.

Tech continues its two-game road trip this Sunday, Jan. 20 when it meets No. 4 Maryland in College Park. Tip-off at the Comcast Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
