Gold museum target of robbery

POSTED: January 27, 2008 5:05 a.m.

On Dec. 24, 2007, Georgia Department of Natural Resources site manager Angela Johnson received information, from an anonymous caller, of a possible conspiracy to steal valuable coins from the Dahlonega Gold Museum.

Johnson notified the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy and city marshal employee provided additional security for the museum.

According to reports from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s office, investigators were able to determine that one of the suspects in the conspiracy had recently visited the museum. Further investigation revealed that the two co-conspirators lived in different states, one in Florida and the other in New Hampshire.

No charges were filed and both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of the Investigation were contacted.

No connection has been made between the Dahlonega Gold Museum conspiracy and a recent theft of gold coins in Florida.
