Students from East Hall High School stand with scarecrows they constructed for residents of Smoky Springs Retirement Community in Gainesville.

East Hall Middle School Creative Learning students recently delivered 28 scarecrows to residents of the Smoky Springs Retirement Community in Gainesville. The students and their teachers, Lisa Martin and Scott Patrick, made the scarecrows as part of an intergenerational community service project with Kathryn Martin of CareSouth Home Health and the residents of Smoky Springs.
The students helped install the scarecrows and then enjoyed cookies and lemonade with the residents.  

Kenneth Goolsby of Gainesville recently graduated from Boston University in Boston.

Kat King, a junior studying industrial design at Georgia Institute of Technology, was recently honored as the graphic artist for the Women's Leadership Conference at the college, with her logo appearing in conference materials and promotions.

King, of Gainesville, is the daughter of David and Julia King and granddaughter of Garland Reynolds. She is a 2007 graduate of Lakeview Academy in Gainesville.

Michael McGinnis, professor and head of the chemistry department at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, was recently awarded the O.F. Stambaugh Chemistry Alumni Award during Elizabethtown College's homecoming weekend.

McGinnis is a 1992 graduate of the college, located in Elizabethtown, Pa. He then went on to receive his doctoarte in organic chemistry from the University of Tennessee, where he started his teaching career. From there, he went on to become a faculty member at NGCSU.

His research interests include molecular modeling, microwave assisted alkyl halide reactions and chirality of sodium chlorate and sodium bromate.
