Missing elderly Hall County man located

He's believed to be in good condition

POSTED: November 20, 2009 9:58 a.m.

An elderly Hall County man who went missing Wednesday was located at a Cobb County drug store this morning and has been reunited with his family following a brief hospitalization, authorities said.

Walter Robitaille, 82, was the subject of an intensive search after he failed to pick up his wife at a Flat Creek Road business early Wednesday evening. Robitaille suffers from dementia and uses oxygen for a heart condition, authorities said.

Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland said Robitaille, who was driving, showed up around 5 a.m. today at a 24-hour Walgreens pharmacy in Austell seeking medical treatment. An employee found contact information for Robitaille’s daughter in his wallet and contacted the family. He was later taken to a Cobb County hospital, where he was treated and released, Strickland said.

Robitaille left his Merlin Drive home in Oakwood at about 6 p.m. driving a blue 2000 Buick LeSabre. Family members alerted authorities after he failed to arrive at his destination.

Robitaille was later seen about 8 p.m. Wednesday by a parking attendant at Old Federal Campground, where he asked directions from the attendant.

Strickland said authorities believe Robitaille stayed a hotel in Macon on Wednesday night and was at a gas station in Marietta about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

A “Mattie’s Call” alert was issued to law enforcement agencies Wednesday night around midnight, and a state patrol helicopter searched the southern end of the Hall County area Thursday afternoon. Sheriff’s south end patrol units were actively looking for Robitaille throughout the last few days, Strickland said.

Robitaille had a four-hour supply of oxygen for his heart condition when he left home, Strickland said.
