High school football: State playoff brackets shuffled

POSTED: November 9, 2009 8:50 p.m.
It’s an old sports cliché that teams should take seasons one game at a time and not get ahead of themselves — especially when the playoffs roll around.

A fan of the Pelham High Hornets doing just the opposite led to the Georgia High School Sports Association re-drawing the playoff brackets Monday morning.

“Somebody pointed out, and they were correct, that the brackets were incorrect,” GHSA spokesperson Steve Figueroa said.

The error was that in Regions 1-4, the No. 1 seed from each region should have been, but wasn’t, in the same draw as the No. 4 seed from that same region.

Regions 5-8 included the expected match ups between the No. 1 and No. 4-seeded teams, along with the No. 2 and No. 3-seeded teams.

First- and second-round pairings remain the same, but potential quarterfinal matchups have been altered significantly.

“We thought it was much simpler to fix (the brackets) now than to get to the semifinals and have to stick to our guns because we’d made a mistake,” Figueroa said. “And just to be clear, we didn’t look at teams’ schedules when making the changes, we only looked at the seedings in the regions.”

Several area teams could be affected by the re-drawing. In AAA, if No. 1 Gainesville (10-0) advances to the quarterfinals it would now play No. 5 Baldwin (8-2) instead of No. 3 Peach County (10-0). Peach moves into the quarter with No. 4 St. Pius (10-0), which would meet No. 8 North Hall — should the Trojans get past Ringgold — in the second round of the playoffs.

The expected quarterfinal showdown between No. 1 Calhoun and No. 2 Fitzgerald has been erased. Now, Calhoun is more likely to meet No. 4 Jefferson County (10-0), while Fitzgerald is quartered with unranked Callaway (8-2). Defending champion and No. 3-ranked Buford’s draw got tougher because now Fitzgerald is in the same half as both the Wolves and No. 4 Jefferson, two teams that could face off in the second round of the playoffs.
