The residents of Lula stood by an old adage on election day: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Mayor Milton Turner and Councilwoman Vicky Chambers were both re-elected Tuesday for a third term.

It was an incredibly close race for the Post 2 council seat: Chambers won re-election by just eight votes. She received 132 votes and Bruce Lane followed with 124.

Turner received 155 votes to beat challenger Paul Cox, who had 104 votes.

Turner said he looks forward to another four years with the council.

"We will continue moving forward with all the projects we have and more to come in the future," Turner said. "Winning a third term as mayor shows that people still have a little confidence in my leadership."

Cox said though he lost he will still be paying close attention to Lula politics and thinks his supporters will too.

"People are going to be watching," Cox said.

This election was an important one for Lula. The city council will be charged with many important decisions in the future as the city grapples with impending growth.

On Oct. 30, the city marked a major milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for the new waste water treatment plant.

The $8.5 million facility will bring sewer services to the Ga. 365 corridor and lay the infrastructure for future economic development.

The city is also in the process of revitalizing the downtown area.

Chambers said she is happy to be re-elected.

"I’m excited and I’m looking forward to the next four years and making Lula a better place," Chambers said. "We must be doing something right."

Lane was unavailable for comment at press time.

Post 4 Councilman Mordecai Wilson won re-election unopposed.
