3-Day Walk brings family together for support

Event will raise money for breast cancer research

POSTED: October 21, 2009 11:47 p.m.

One family is coming together from across the country to support their sister and participate in the Atlanta Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk.

North Hall resident Jennie Clayton is hosting her childhood friends as they get ready to walk 60 miles from Lake Lanier Islands to the site of the former Fulton County Stadium, across from Turner Field in downtown Atlanta this weekend.

Clayton’s best friend Carrie Chute is flying in from Seattle, Wash., and will meet up with sisters Mary Llaurador and Laura Kitchens, who also is recovering from breast cancer.

"We were best friends in high school and maintained a friendship forever," Clayton said. "(Chute’s) sister had breast cancer, a double mastectomy, and all the sisters are coming in to do the 3-Day together."

The sisters and a few other team members will stay with Clayton tonight before rising early Friday morning to start the walk, which raises money for breast cancer research.

Clayton’s father will also be in town to cook a large supper for the group tonight.

Clayton said though she is not personally participating in the physically demanding three-day walk, she is happy she can support her friends before they begin their meaningful journey.

"I’ll probably cry," Clayton said. "Her family was like my family. They’re an amazing family."

The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk will begin with an opening ceremony Lake Lanier Islands and move through Buford, Suwanee, Norcross, Duluth, Chamblee and other Atlanta suburbs throughout the weekend before ending Sunday night in downtown Atlanta.

"We all went to Grady High School in downtown Atlanta," Clayton said. "This is a group of people that has stayed close from the mid-’70s to now."
