In a region that boasts Class AAA’s No. 1-ranked team, Gainesville, it’s easy to be outshined and overlooked.
But Johnson High senior quarterback Anthony Prophet is taking the season one game at a time and savoring the wins when they come.
“It’s big to be the king of Oakwood,” said Prophet of the Knights’ 49-45 win over West Hall on Friday.
The senior rushed for a school-record six touchdowns in the game and churned up 173 yards off 12 carries for Johnson (2-5. 1-1 Region 7B-AAA).
“He did great and had an outstanding game,” said coach Paul Friel of Prophet. “He did an excellent job of playing his leads and was a great leader on the field.”
The Knights got some much needed retribution against the Spartans (0-7, 0-3 Region 7B-AAA) who defeated them 56-55 in a heartbreaker last year at Spartans Stadium.
Johnson ran the ball for a total of 439 yards, but rarely passed with Prophet throwing the ball only three times with one completion to senior Seth Spivey for 21 yards.
West Hall elected to use an opposite offense to Johnson’s run with quarterback Shunquez Stephens passing for 452 yards and six touchdowns; however, it was Prophet who left as the victor in the quarrel of quarterbacks.
When asked about Prophet’s performance last Friday, Friel said, “He’s really worked hard. He’s a gutsy performer who put together the best game in his career. We’re all proud of him.”
Johnson plays host to West Forsyth at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Oakwood.
