THE BLITZ: Player of the Week Deon Brock

Deon Brock, Commerce High School senior half back, talks about his breakout game last week against Athens Academy. Having your name etched in history isn’t something that happens often. It’s rare even on the high school level.

But Commerce’s Deon Brock is making waves and carving his name into the fabric of Tigers football forever.

Brock was the only scorer for the Tigers last week and rushed 16 times for 256 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught three passes from quarterback Cody Streetman for 42 yards and a touchdown in Commerce’s 28-7 win against Athens Academy.

But it was a 96-yard touchdown run, the second longest in the program’s 61-year history, that shone through an already impressive performance on the field.

"It felt good after I realized what had happened," Brock said. "At first I hadn’t realized how far back we were."

Brock has churned up 756 yards with 12 touchdowns on the ground for the Tigers (2-3, 1-0 Region 8-A) this year, but isn’t haughty about his notable achievements finding it important to reflect on his minor faults.

"I didn’t do too hot of a job blocking, that was part of my job I didn’t do well," he stated about his performance Friday.

When asked about the rest of the season, Brock swayed slightly, shook his head a bit and earnestly said, "I’m just going to continue to do whatever I can to help this team."

Commerce visits Athens Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Eagle Field.
