Drug, gun charges dropped against Dawson County High School student

POSTED: January 10, 2008 5:03 a.m.

A Dawson County High School student arrested earlier this month for drug and weapon possession has been cleared of all charges, authorities said Friday.

Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle said investigators now think Rachel Victoria Caldwell, 17, was set up by an acquaintance, who planted a stolen firearm and bags of suspected marijuana in her vehicle on the school campus.

School officials were alerted to the items found in Caldwell’s car by an anonymous phone tip Dec. 19.

Caldwell, a senior, was suspended from school for 10 days. She is expected to return to classes and the girls varsity basketball squad when school resumes in January.

School officials are on winter break and could not be reached for additional comment.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Wooten said Caldwell had maintained she did not know about the drugs and the loaded Glock school officials found during a search of her vehicle.

Wooten said Caldwell told authorities she had been set up, a story that panned out as the investigation progressed.

As of Friday, authorities had not released the identity of the suspect, though Sheriff Billy Carlisle said they "have enough evidence to charge him."
