Dinner theater debuts murder mystery

POSTED: September 9, 2009 9:30 p.m.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

At Buford Variety Theater, murder is on the menu alongside the teriyaki chicken and coconut shrimp.

A new Flowery Branch-based theater company, Dangerous Liaisons, will entertain the audience island-style with "Hawaii 6-0," an original murder mystery dinner theater production set to take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Housed in a former Presbyterian church in Buford's historic downtown, the theater usually hosts comedy acts like Ron White, who made a recent appearance.

"Hawaii 6-0" will be the first play on stage at the theater, and the story follows a group of people in the entertainment business.

"It is very silly," said Laura Ward of Flowery Branch, a producer for Dangerous Liaisons.

When a character is murdered, the search for the culprit begins and Ward said the murderer "could be the old surf guru, who is still on the island, could be me, could be a member of the audience, could be anybody."

Ward, who also is on the board of directors for Fifth Row Center, a South Hall-based community theater group, was looking for a job in theater when her ex-husband told her about Buford Variety Theater.

"I went in with him and the boys, my sons, and I met Cheryl (Bowlin, the theater's owner), and I said, ‘You know, have you thought about doing theater here?'" Ward said.

When Bowlin agreed, Ward partnered with Melissa Thomas of Flowery Branch, another professional actress, and the two formed Dangerous Liaisons.

Ward said the group plans to produce other plays after "Hawaii 6-0" closes Sept. 24.

Dinner for "Hawaii 6-0" includes salad, a choice of teriyaki chicken or coconut shrimp, dessert and nonalcoholic drinks.
