What’s worth a thousand words? The Fall Photography Invitational, an exhibit at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center starting today through Oct. 11.

The show is the Quinlan’s part in the North Georgia Photography Experience, an event that includes five North Georgia counties and showcases the region’s photographers.

 At the Quinlan, that showcase includes a variety of photos, from Hewett Beasley’s detailed close-ups of antique cars to Fox Gradin’s whimsical “fairy” portraiture.

“I think the variety that we have is really wonderful,” said Amanda Kroll, executive director of the Quinlan.

“We have, you know, portrait, figurative work. We have abstracts. We have the moody, rusted trains and then we have these whimsical portraits of children, so we kind of cover the whole spectrum of fine art photography. Our goal was to find something that would appeal to everyone.”

Kroll said the invitational will be the first show for Gradin, who lives in Gainesville and is known in the area for her portraiture.

“She does really beautiful portraits of children and she does some whimsical photography, so this is a great opportunity for her to show both sides of what she does,” Kroll said.

Beasley, of Cleveland, will display his own work, but also will include the work of his grandfather.

“He reproduced some of his grandfather’s work,” Kroll said. “His grandfather was a photographer so he had these silver plates that he reproduced. He’s showing that too and kind of how it influenced him, so that’s a really interesting dimension to his part of the show.”

Nine artists will display work for the invitational, including photographers from Atlanta, Athens, Lawrenceville, Dahlonega, Cumming, Cleveland and Gainesville.

The roster includes Gradin, Beasley, Jack Lawing, Lee Anne White, Debra Frieden, O.C. Carlisle, Stefan Eberhard, Jennifer Julian and Stan Susky.

Kroll said, even though the exhibit will close in October, “we’re having some events in September and October to kind of celebrate… with these other venues.”

The reception for the Fall Photography Invitational will be 5:30 p.m. today at the Quinlan.
