The North Georgia College & State University men’s quartet recently performed the national anthem at two Gwinnett Braves games. Members of the quartet are Randy Barker, a college alumnus; Jack Broman, professor of music and director of choral activities at North Georgia College; Rich Grimshaw, a voice major; and Mark Spraker, professor of physics.

The North Georgia Barbershop Singers is now a licensed chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. The chapter’s licensed name is the Lake Lanier, Ga., Chapter, also known as North Georgia Barbershop Singers.

Ike Swofford and Ann Jones, both of Flowery Branch, recently received honors at the 2009 Pinto world Championship in Tulsa, Okla.

Jones and her horse, Delta Getsya Wynnin, earned a reserve world championship and a top-five honor, winning a trophy and belt buckle. Swofford earned a top-five honor in the amateur stakes race with his pinto horse, Patty Melt.

Last year, Swofford took home the world championship title in amateur elite barrel racing.

The annual horse show drew more than 2,000 exhibitors and their pinto horses, and included riding disciplines such as jumping, reining, driving, roping, pleasure and halter classes.

Two Hall County students were among the winners at the annual State 4-H Congress, held July 21-24 in Atlanta.

Corey O'Quinn won first place in communications. The son of Rick and Beverly O'Quinn of Flowery Branch, he was sponsored by the Georgia 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association.

David French won first place in history. The son of Robert and Cynthia French of Flowery Branch, he was sponsored by Arch Smith and the Georgia 4-H Foundation.
