James Henson received the United Daughters of the Confederacy Korean War Cross of Military Service through the Gen. James Longstreet Chapter 46 of Gainesville. The presentation was made at the chapter's Centennial Celebration of Old Joe held June 7. Henson is the great-grandson of Pvt. Joseph Lumpkin Henson, Co. I, 34th Regiment Georgia Infantry.

The Col. William Candler Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution installed six new members at its May meeting,, bringing the total chapter membership to 127. Shelby Whitson, national vice president general and honorary state regent installed the members and also was the guest speaker. Her speech topic was "The DAR Museum Period Rooms." 

The Salvation Army Gainesville Corps was one of 34 regional charities selected by Publix to receive money raised in its "Food For All" holiday fundraising campaign. Publix Super Markets Atlanta Division and its customers raised $331,834 during the annual campaign. The Salvation Army Gainesville Corps received $3,848.21 of the total amount.

Felecia Doyle recently received the Rotary Presidential Award for Exemplary Student Service from South Hall Rotary Club President Brain Cantel. Doyle has sponsored the Flowery Branch High School Interact Club for seven years. The club has been recognized as District 6910 Interact Club of the Year, and students participate in many service projects.

The Wauka Mountain Elementary School Junior Master Gardener "Got Plants?" club celebrated the end of the year with a field trip to Elachee Nature Center, where they learned about water conservation.

There, 10 fourth- and fifth-grade students were certified as Junior Master Gardeners. To be certified, students must complete a program that includes learning about plants, the environment and how they impact our lives. The students also volunteered at Smithgall Woods Arboretum, took plants to senior citizens at local assisted-living facilities and raised funds through an annual plant sale. The Junior Master Gardeners are Lauren Adams, Katie Pitchford, Luke Standridge, Madilyn Patterson, Faith Schuebert, Jacob Gowder, Alex Westfall, Reid Lattanzi, Mary McGarry and Samantha Updegrove.
