No. 7 Lady Dogs crush Mercer

POSTED: December 29, 2007 5:02 a.m.

ATHENS — In one game, Danielle Taylor scored more points than she did all of last season and the first nine games of this year combined.

Taylor came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points in leading No. 7 Georgia (10-0) to a 102-45 rout of in-state foe Mercer on Monday night.

"She is a scorer," Georgia coach Andy Landers said. "She always has been. The tough piece for her is on the defensive end."

Taylor was one of four players who scored career highs against the undermanned Bears (3-7). Freshman Angela Puleo finished with a career-high 14 points and also had nine assists and four steals. Brittany Carter scored 13 and Jaleesa Rhoden 11.

Senior Tasha Humphrey scored 20 points for Georgia, but her string of double-doubles ended at six.

Mercer’s lone bright spot was LaToya Jackson, who also scored a career-best 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers in the process.

The Bears started the game with only eight players available, and played the last nine minutes with no subs after two disqualifications and an injury.

"We learned that there are a lot of really good players at Georgia," Mercer coach Janell Jones said. "We are young and inexperienced. We have to stay positive and build on what we’re doing well and look forward to conference play."

Taylor’s previous career high was 11 as a freshman against Savannah State in 2005. Last year she scored seven points all season, and so far this year she had totaled 10.

"I have been getting better in practice going against Tasha," she said. "The high post shot was going well for me tonight."

Georgia took control early, capitalizing on its size advantage with 6-foot-5 Angel Robinson and 6-3 Humphrey scoring the team’s first nine points. Puleo hit four 3-pointers.

By halftime, Georgia led 64-29.
