Union County jails man on robbery charges

A North Carolina man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the robbery of Appalachian Community Bank in Blairsville.

According to a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Burton Arnold Coker, 35, entered the bank and presented a note to the teller demanding money. Coker was given an undisclosed amount of money and left the bank.

His vehicle was spotted heading north on Ga. 129 by Blairsville police officers and deputy sheriffs of Union County. A vehicle chase ensued, ending with Coker wrecking his vehicle.

He then fled on foot and was captured in a wooded area near the scene of the wreck, the report stated.

Coker is being held at the Union County Jail charged with one count of robbery. He has also been charged with the June 7, 2006, robbery of the Regions Bank in Clayton; the Aug. 29, 2006, and Oct. 23, 2007, robberies of the Stephens Federal Bank in Hiawassee and the Sept. 6, 2006, robbery of the Bank of Hiawassee in Young Harris.

Coker has additionally been charged with the robbery of a bank in Franklin, N.C., during November.
