Officials say former DA not connected to bank robberies

POSTED: December 22, 2007 5:02 a.m.
The home of former Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tim Madison was searched Friday in connection with Dec. 3 bank robberies in McDuffie and Oconee counties.

Madison fit the description of a robber who hit banks in the two counties, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Madison’s home in Franklin County on Friday, local officials said.

John Heinen, special agent in charge of the Athens GBI office, said he could not release the suspect’s name, but confirmed that a house in Franklin County was searched.

Heinen also said that no evidence was found linking Madison to the crimes. "All the evidence we’ve found so far eliminated the person who resides at that residence," he said.

Madison’s attorney, Ed Tolley, could not be reached for comment.

Madison is already awaiting trial for mishandling public funds, among other charges. Before resigning in June, he had served as district attorney for the Piedmont Judicial Circuit, which includes Banks, Barrow and Jackson counties, for some 25 years.
