Mother-daughter tea planned for Saturday

POSTED: May 6, 2009 11:34 p.m.

It’s not quite high tea with the queen, but an upcoming event for mothers and daughters at the Spout Springs Branch of the Hall County Library will be just as special.

In honor of Mother’s Day, which is Sunday, library officials have planned an afternoon of high tea and a little mother and daughter bonding at 1 p.m. Saturday at the library in Flowery Branch.

"This is the second time that we’ve held the mother-daughter tea," said Adrianne Junius, assistant children’s librarian.

"We decided to do another one now because we thought it would be a fun way to honor mothers for Mother’s Day."

At the event, attendees will have their choice of traditional Southern and English tea treats like cucumber sandwiches, cheese straws and ginger cookies.

Tea obviously will be served, but for those who prefer a different beverage, lemonade also will be available.

The tea is open to all mother and daughters, but the girls must be at least kindergarten age.

Besides sipping on tea and munching on snacks, attendees also will have the opportunity to participate in a few "character-building exercises to help them develop better self-esteem and relationships."

Besides having a little fun, the goal of the tea is to help mothers and daughters forge stronger relationships, Junius says.

When you think of high tea, images of lace gloves and frilly dresses may come to mind, but such dressy attire isn’t required, the only requirement is that you reserve your space in advance.

"At the last event, we had a lot of girls who dressed up," Junius said. "But we tell moms and daughters that they can dress up in high tea attire if they want to, but if not, that is perfectly fine with us."
