The Gainesville Music Club announces the festival scholarship winners from both the North Gainesville Music Festival and the South Gainesville Festival held recently in Gainesville.

  • Abigail Chetta, daughter of Marc and Helen Chetta of Clarkesville, was awarded the North Gainesville Festival Piano Scholarship. The homeschooled 11th-grader is a piano student of Keith Jefcoat in Gainesville.
  • Amanda Harmon, daughter of William and Rosalie Harmon, of Toccoa, received a scholarship for being named the first alternate in the North Gainesville Festival Piano Competition. The homeschooled senior studies piano with Jefcoat.
  • Victoria Tuck, daughter of Fred and Debbie Tuck of Dunwoody, was named the South Gainesville Festival Piano Scholarship winner. The Chamblee Middle School eighth-grader studies piano with Jean Kuehn of Gainesville.
  • Anna Allen, daughter of Barry and Vicki Allen of Buford, will receive a scholarship for being selected as the first alternate in the South Gainesville Festival Piano Competition. The Mill Creek High School sophomore studies piano with her mother, Vicki.
  • Steven Jones, son of Rosa L. Scott of Sugar Hill, received the South Gainesville Vocal Art Song Scholarship. The North Gwinnett High School junior studies voice with Greg Oliver of Lawrenceville.
  • Lauren Dawidowicz, daughter of Bogdan and Kathy Dawidowicz of Sugar Hill, was awarded the South Gainesville Festival Musical Theater Scholarship. The North Gwinnett High School junior studies voice with Oliver.
  • Jenny Zimler, daughter of Randy and Sandra Zimler of Gainesville, won the Gainesville Music Club Strings Scholarship. The homeschooled sophomore studies violin with Laurin Smith of Athens.

All teachers are members of The Gainesville Music Club, which sponsors the annual Junior Music Festivals in conjunction with the Georgia and National Federations of Music clubs.

As part of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, United Hospice of Gainesville honored its hospice volunteers with a luncheon, appreciation certificates and awards. Bonnie Reeser was awarded for most volunteer hours. Barry Cason was awarded as best new volunteer. Betty Singletary was awarded volunteer of the year. The Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville received funds from the Gainesville Multicultural Committee for 2009 scholarships to the Quinlan Visual Arts Center Summer Art Camp program.

Funds raised from this year’s Latin Gala, hosted by the Multicultural Committee and the Quinlan, will allow the Quinlan to award selected students scholarships for a one-week session of camp. Each session is normally $125 per camper and allows children ages 5 to 14 to learn about art and art history and to participate in hands-on creative activities.

Hall County 4-H held their annual Spring Equine Classic horse show March 27-28 at the Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center in Gainesville. The riders competed in Western and English classes.

Courtney Woodard was the champion/high point winner in Western Showmanship, Open Western and Contesting division; Mae Musselwhite was the champion/high point winner in the Novice Western division; Amanda Viggiano was the champion/high point winner of the Hunter Showmanship division; Madison Hightower was the champion/high point winner in the Walk-Trot Hunt Seat division A; MacKenzie Boerger was the champion/high point winner of the Walk-Trot Hunt Seat division B; Erin McGlone was the champion/high point of the Novice Hunt Seat division A and Mary Evelyn Brock was the champion/high point winner of the Novice Hunt Seat division B. Virginia Wells was the champion/high point winner of the Short/Long Stirrup division.
