Braselton chili competition a taster’s paradise

POSTED: April 12, 2009 11:30 p.m.

If you’re looking for a hot way to pass some time this weekend, you may want to head over to Braselton for the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-Off.

“There are 12 local businesses with participating teams. You can purchase an arm band for $5 which will get you unlimited ‘tastes’ of chili and a ticket for a bowl of your favorite,” said Linda Foster, chamber vice president of member services.

“If you don’t want the arm band, you can purchase individual tickets for 50 cents each and one ticket will get you a ‘taste’ and five tickets will buy a bowl.”

The team that collects the most tickets will be given the “People’s Choice” award.

Each team will have to present an unmarked bowl of their special chili to a panel of three judges. The judges will then ultimately decide who will receive awards for best tasting chili and showmanship for booth decorations.

This is the fifth year for the chamber’s chili cook-off. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce and a way for the group to provide a bit of family fun and to promote Jackson County businesses.

According to Foster, the annual event tends to draw a large crowd.

“Last year, we had approximately 5,000 attendees at the event,” she said. “We are still accepting (cook-off) teams. There is a mandatory team meeting on Tuesday; we will not be able to accept more teams after that time.”

The chili cook-off will be held from 3-6 p.m. at YearOne, an automotive supply company that specializes in hard-to-find parts for late-model vehicles. The cook-off will be held in conjunction with YearOne’s monthly Braselton Bash.

The Braselton Bash will run from 3-8 p.m. and will feature a car show, family activities and a kid’s play area.

The Gainesville Police Department is also expected to hold a DUI demonstration and there will be a “Leave Your Mark” BF Goodrich Burnout Exhibition.
