Prep basketball roundup: Lady Falcons upset top-ranked East Hall

The Flowery Branch High girls basketball team earned its fourth consecutive victory with a 29-28 upset of Class AAA's top-ranked East Hall on Friday night at the Falcons' Fieldhouse.

Junior Claire Tyler led the Lady Falcons (4-0, 1-0 Region 7-AAA) with 15 points.

"It was a great win for us tonight," Flowery Branch coach Angela Middelton said. "This win was the first time we've beat East Hall in three years. With such a young team, it was just great for us to beat a top-ranked opponent."

Lady Falcons' senior Jessica Hart added five points, while Danielle Miller scored four and Cash Champion added three. East Hall center and South Carolina signee Sada Wheeler was held to eight points.

Flowery Branch plays host to Gilmer at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while East Hall plays host to Gainesville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Banks Co. 50, Commerce 49

With six seconds remaining in the game, Lady Leopards' (1-2) junior Jessica Grisham sealed the Banks County victory with a steal.

The win marks coach Jerry King's first career victory at Banks County.

"It was a great win for us tonight," King said. "It was a close game throughout, and we just made a big play at the end."

Lady Tigers' (0-1) senior point guard Brittany Sewell led all scorers with 24 points. Lacey Saxon led Banks County with 13 points and Lauren Kennedy added 11.

Banks County plays host to Union County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Pace 30, Lakeview 22

The Lakeview Academy High girls basketball team dropped its third consecutive game Friday night in Gainesville.

Sophomore Megan Rochester led the Lady Lions (0-3) with eight points, while Louisa Jacobs added seven.

Pace Academy's Kaitlin Dinkins led all scores with 10 points.

Lakeview Academy plays host to Chestatee at 6 p.m. tonight.

Jackson Co. 58, Apalachee 45

Freshman forward Brianna Drew led Jackson County (2-1) with 20 points Friday night in Barrow County.

"We had a great game tonight," Jackson County coach Chad Pittman said. "But we are looking forward to our game (today) with East Jackson."

Jackson County visits cross-county rival East Jackson at 4 p.m. today.

Lumpkin Co. 45, Johnson 36

Lumpkin County junior Lacey Wallingford led all scorers with 17 points Friday night in Oakwood.

Lady Indians' guard Ashley Brown added 15 points and Cara Malone scored 10. Johnson's Jordan Gustavel scored 13 points and Shekira Cooper added nine.

BOYS

Flowery Branch 79, East Hall 59

The Falcons (4-0, 2-0 Region 7-AAA) outscored East Hall (1-1, 1-1) every quarter to beat the Vikings on Friday night in Flowery Branch.

Senior guard A.C. Bailey led Flowery Branch with 19 points. Sophomore Ishmael Hollis and junior Phillips Chau scored 14 points a piece. Junior Josh Barrett chipped in 11 points.

Trevor Bishop led East Hall (1-1, 1-1 Region 7-AAA) with 14 points.

Flowery Branch plays host to Gilmer at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Pace 85, Lakeview 48

Pace Academy senior Zuri James led Pace Academy with 27 points Friday night in Gainesville. Lions' (2-1) senior David Pruett scored 11 points, while Tyler Ward scored eight.

Lakeview plays host to Chestatee at 7:30 tonight.

Dawson Co. 53, Oglethorpe 41

Blyth Chester led the Tigers with 16 points Friday night in Dawsonville. Senior Robert O'Quinn added 11 points for Dawson County (3-1).

Dawsonville visits Providence at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

College roundup

Gainesville High grad Brent Benson scored 19 points as Texas State squeaked past Prairie View A&M on Thursday night in a 79-78 victory to close out its four-game road swing.

Texas State, which is riding a three-game winning streak, plays host to Rice Thursday ay 7 p.m.
