County bike, skate park may rise on donated land

POSTED: April 5, 2009 10:43 p.m.

Hall County is looking to develop a skate park and other facilities after receiving a land donation of more than 70 acres.

Cool Springs LLC, developer of the Marina Bay subdivision, offered a parcel of its holdings to Hall County for free.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful,” said Commissioner Billy Powell, in whose district the park will be built. “It shows the thoughtfulness for the community the developers have.”

Currently, there are no county facilities for skateboarding and BMX biking, said Parks and Leisure Director Greg Walker.

“There’s a void for those facilities,” Walker said. “The face of recreation has changed ... the recreation is X-Games type of recreation.”

Powell said he believes the skating facilities will be very popular after hearing about similar parks in other counties.

“It includes a lot of features that are going to make it one of the most used parks in the area,” Powell said.

Powell, Walker and Public Works Director Ken Rearden worked on the plans for the proposed park.

The conceptual plan for the facility also includes baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, multipurpose fields, bike trails, a pond and a playground.

The park will be among the largest in the county.

“It’s about three times the size of our school-in-a-parks,” which include Hog Mountain and Chestatee, Walker said.

Because the land came at no cost to the county, there will be more funding available to develop facilities.

Powell said he thinks the park could cost around $4 million, much of which would come from SPLOST funds and impact fees.

“It’s very rare that you get something donated like that,” Walker said.
