Times reporter contributed to award-winning coverage

POSTED: April 2, 2009 12:11 a.m.

Times reporter Melissa Weinman was part of the team awarded a top investigative prize for coverage of faculty sexual harassment while working for the University of Georgia’s independent student newspaper.

The winners in the student category for all media were Weinman, Kristen Coulter, Brian Hughes, Carolyn Crist and Matthew Grayson of The Red & Black for their series "Sexual Harassment at UGA."

An anonymous tip led to reporting numerous incidents of harassment, some dating back two decades. As a result of the reports, the university has changed its policy to require extensive anti-harrassment training for faculty and administration.

The awards, given by Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc., recognize the most outstanding watchdog journalism of the year. The contest covers 15 categories across media platforms and a range of market sizes. The contest, which began in 1979, received more than 380 entries this year. Other recipients include The Detroit Free Press, CBS News-60 Minutes and National Public Radio.

Weinman graduated from UGA last May and joined The Times’ staff soon thereafter.
