Sorority to sponsor Saturday health fair

POSTED: March 25, 2009 11:44 p.m.

The sisters of an area sorority want to make sure that you and your family stay in good health.

This Saturday, members of the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will be sponsoring a health fair at Featherbone Communiversity in Gainesville.

Every year, Delta Sigma Theta chapters participate in an international day of service where they focus on projects centered around improving the human condition.

"One of our goals as an organization is to focus on the health of the people in our community," said Sheriah Richardson, president of the Hall County chapter.

"Last year, we participated in Hike-for-Hope, which raises money for the North Georgia AIDS Alliance. This year, we wanted to do something different so we decided to sponsor a community health fair."

At the event, attendees will be able to participate in various health-related activities, including cholesterol screening and blood donation.

"We will also have various vendors at the health fair," Richardson said.

"There will be representatives from the Stephen Nicholas Healthy Hearts Foundation and also from Babies Can’t Wait."

The Stephen Nicholas Healthy Hearts Foundation is an organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of families and patients who are affected by pediatric cardiomyopathy, a rare heart condition that affects the heart muscles of some infants and children.

Babies Can’t Wait is a program administered through the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health. Through the program, state officials provide early intervention services to infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities and their families.

"The health fair is free and will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.," Richardson said.

"It’s open to everyone in the Hall County community and we invite everyone to come out and take part."
