Flood watch issued for Northeast Georgia as steady rains move in

POSTED: March 14, 2009 9:05 p.m.
A full day of steady rain has led the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for Northeast Georgia and other areas of the state through Monday morning.

As much as 2 to 3 inches of rain is expected in the area tonight and Sunday. A total of 0.35 inch of rain fell between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. today at the NWS recording station at Gainesville's Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.

With the grounds still moist from the rain and snow that fell in the area March 1, some flooding of creeks and streams is possible as the showers move through.

Those feeder streams also could raise the water level of Lake Lanier, which was at 1,058.23 feet above sea level Saturday, 13 feet below full pool.
