City postpones hearing on proposed duplex

POSTED: March 12, 2009 11:33 p.m.

Because it didn’t have enough members present, the Flowery Branch City Council postponed a public hearing Thursday night on a Lula man’s application to build a duplex on Church Street at Mooney Drive.

The remaining council members rescheduled the hearing for 6 p.m. April 16 at City Hall, 5517 Main St.

However, James Riker, the city’s city planning director, spent a few minutes talking about the project with residents who sh owed up for the hearing. Several of them spoke against the plans.

Rhonda McIlwrath of Church Street was particularly vocal about Bill Roberts’ plans to build on the half-acre lot.

"To me, it seems you’re putting too much on a small chunk of property," she told Riker.

Each 1,200-square-foot unit will feature two bedrooms and bathrooms and a two-car garage, according to paperwork from the city.

And David Roberts, a city resident who plans to move soon to the neighborhood, said residents were concerned that more than one family would live on the property.

"It’s not conducive to the rest of the (single-family) properties around it," he said.
