I-985 work delayed because of crane malfunction

POSTED: March 12, 2009 11:29 p.m.

Overnight work on Mundy Mill Road at Interstate 985 has been delayed because of problems with a crane used to lift bridge beams.

The boom on the crane collapsed during work overnight Wednesday, said Erica Fatima, the state Department of Transportation’s deputy press secretary.

The operator was able to place the beam back down without damage to property or injury to workers, she added.

The beam may have had "superficial damage — we’re not for sure," Fatima said. "That’s under investigation because these (beams) are a critical component (in the project)."

Crews had been working from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. this week to set bridge beams over Mundy Mill as part of a new I-985 northbound bridge.

"One thing we want to stress is that they have implemented a safety procedure that no traffic will be allowed to come through while bridge repairs are going on, for just these types of reasons," Fatima said.

The work is part of a $74 million makeover of I-985 at Exit 16 and surrounding roads. The project also includes a new interchange, Exit 17.

The entire project is expected to be completed in December.
