Officials: Suspect wrecked stolen car

POSTED: March 4, 2009 11:32 p.m.

A Gainesville man faces multiple charges after wrecking a car he had stolen from Auto Zone in Gainesville, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

John McGee, 54, of Gainesville was driving south on Ga. 60 at about 6:15 p.m. when he passed in a no-passing zone in a curve near Candler Park Drive and struck an oncoming Ford Econoline van, according to GSP Trooper Matthew Miles.

McGee was not being pursued by authorities when the wreck happened, but a lookout had been placed on the gold 1991 Nissan Maxima McGee was driving, he said. It had been reported stolen from the Auto Zone on Jesse Jewell Parkway moments before the wreck.

McGee was taken via helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and was in stable condition Wednesday night, Miles said.

The driver of the van, Jose Gomez-Vazquez, 47, of Sylva, N.C., was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with minor injuries, he said.

Both vehicles ended up in a ditch.

McGee faces multiple traffic charges, Miles said, and the Gainesville Police Department is investigating the car theft.

In an unrelated incident, a wreck on Thompson Mill Road in South Hall shortly before 8 p.m. backed up traffic to about Spout Springs Road at one point, according to a Hall County dispatcher.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Hall County Fire Services worked the wreck, which happened near Corners Drive.

Two vehicles were involved in the wreck, and one person was taken via helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, according to Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident, Strickland said.

No additional information was available, as the state patrol remained on the scene Wednesday night.
