North Forsyth County gets new traffic light

A new traffic signal at Ga. 9 and Spot Road in North Forsyth County should be operational by midmorning Thursday, weather permitting.

Testing of the signal is set to take place today, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

"Please slow down through the area and use extra caution until you get familiar with the new signal location," said District Engineer Russell McMurry. "Remember to watch out for other drivers until they get used to the new signal too."

Work at the intersection is part of a construction project involving the upgrade of seven intersections in Forsyth County.

Six of the intersections involve Ga. 9 and are at AC Smith Road, Spot Road, Ga. 371, Hamby Road, Majors Road and Castleberry Road.

The other intersection is at Ga. 20 and Ga. 371.

The $8.2 million project is set for completion on Dec. 31.

In Hall County, a traffic light started operating Wednesday on McEver Road at H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway/Rafe Banks Drive, said Jason Spencer, public works director for Oakwood.

The city spent $175,000 on the project.

And Flowery Branch is working to place a traffic light at Thurmon Tanner Parkway and Phil Niekro Boulevard.

City Manager Bill Andrew said Monday that in the next two weeks, "we’re going to meet with a couple of the property owners to work with them on right-of-way acquisition and/or donation."

The city "is wanting to try to design the layout to really be the final design for what would be the highest use of that site," Andrew said.

Large tracts of developable land surround the intersection, particularly the Hall Creek Village property between Thurmon Tanner and Interstate 985.
