A prescribed burn by the Georgia Forestry Commission on Tuesday caused some smoke near the area of Ga. 365 and White Sulphur Road.

Phillip Anderson, a ranger for the agency, said the burn began Tuesday morning. Rangers finished setting the fire by 2 p.m., but it was expected to burn through the afternoon.

"We’ll stay with it until it gets secure inside our fire breaks we put in about a month ago, and then we leave it with the groundskeeper to watch and look after," he said.

The burn was on between 75 and 100 acres of privately owned land and is called a siviculture burn, which is a service offered, for a fee, by the Forestry Commission.

"It’s a great service; it protects the landowner in case there was a fire. It makes their home more protected," Anderson said.
