Thompson: Automated hammer is no replacement for brute force

POSTED: February 21, 2009 12:56 a.m.
I have to tell you that I was extremely disappointed when I tested this new product: The Craftsman Hammerhead Auto Hammer. As its name implies, it’s an automated hammer. It’s really a mini jackhammer that hits a nail 35 times per second. It is battery operated and has the form factor of a hammer. Why wasn’t I impressed with it? When I tried it out with a variety of nails, I found that it would bend the smaller nails and wouldn’t be able to drive the larger ones. The cost is $99 and you can find it at Sears. If you really want to try it out, just remember to keep the receipt.

I’ve found the perfect guy gift for fewer than $20. It’s the LED Baseball Cap. Yes, it’s a baseball cap that has built-in LED lights in the brim. (For all of my female readers: I know this sounds really geeky, but trust me, guys will think it’s cool). There are several manufacturers, and there are a variety of styles. Some have two LEDs and some have four. One manufacturer has a model with red LEDs for night vision. Yes, you can even get it in camo. The caps came out right before Christmas, and you can now find them at most home improvement stores.
