Armed Buford man arrested near school after chase

POSTED: February 7, 2009 12:34 a.m.

A Buford man who fled from a traffic stop made by Hall County sheriff’s deputies Friday was arrested on the grounds of a Gwinnett County school with a loaded handgun in his pocket, authorities said.

Col. Jeff Strickland said Jeffrey Jackson, 27, was pulled over around noon Friday by a deputy for speeding on Atlanta Highway near the Gwinnett County line. As the deputy walked up to the car, Jackson drove off, Strickland said.

A short pursuit continued into Gwinnett County, where Jackson’s car struck a curb on Robert Bell Parkway, causing a tire to deflate. Jackson allegedly ran along a fence line on the campus of Buford Academy, a Buford city school for grades three through five on Robert Bell Parkway about two miles south of the Hall County line.

Several deputies assisted in the chase and Jackson was arrested on the school grounds. A search turned up a gun in his pocket, Strickland said.

Buford Academy and Buford Middle School were locked down for a short time as a precautionary measure.

Jackson was arrested on charges of fleeing and attempting to elude and was taken to the Hall County jail.
