School board to vote on pre-K program

POSTED: February 2, 2009 10:37 p.m.

The Gainesville Board of Education discussed the financial status of its day care and pre-kindergarten programs Monday. The board aims for the programs to become revenue neutral for the school system.

Gainesville schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said the board approved adding 12 more children of non-employees, such as grandchildren of employees or children of Parent and Teacher Associations or school governing councils, to the day care program this year “so that we can break even.” She said the board will

vote on Feb. 17 on whether to continue the system’s pre-kindergarten program.

Dyer said the board also discussed options for its Pioneer Research Education Service Agency program, to which the state is likely to cut portions of funding.
