Discussion of signs, rezoning on Jefferson City Council agenda

POSTED: January 10, 2009 11:34 p.m.

The Jefferson City Council is looking to keep up with the signs of the times.

At its regularly scheduled work session Monday, the council will discuss potential amendments to existing sign ordinances.

According to the agenda for the meeting, "The primary purposes of the amendment are to address new technologies that enable multiple messages electronically or otherwise on an individual sign face."

The council also is expected to continue a discussion concerning a rezoning request from Harvest Chapel Ministries Inc. for a parcel of property located at 2106 Old Pendergrass Road.

The church wants to have the property rezoned from office-institutional to highway commercial, "for the purpose of a proposed Dollar General Store."

Harvest Chapel Ministries originally brought the request before the council at the group’s Dec. 8 work session. Before the group could vote on the item during its Dec. 22 voting session, the applicant requested that the item be continued until Monday’s meeting.

When the proposal was first presented to the City Council, several residents from the site’s surrounding neighborhood attended the meeting to oppose the rezoning request.

The Jefferson City Council will also get an update on road projects, 2009 general elections and the Jefferson Streetscapes project.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Jefferson Civic Center on Kissam Street.
