Teen’s death probe awaits toxicology test results

POSTED: January 9, 2009 12:51 a.m.

HOSCHTON — The investigation surrounding how 14-year-old Brittane Nichole Brown died last month still is pending, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Jackson County Comprehensive High School freshman was found dead at a Hoschton home on Dec. 27.

Jackson County schools resumed classes this week, and counseling services were available at the high school, according to Ed Wyrick, a counselor at Jackson County Comprehensive High School.

"There’s nothing more difficult in the life of a school when we lose a student," said Wyrick. "We’re all impacted by that."

The West Jackson Fire Department and Jackson County EMS responded to a 911 call from occupants at the White Street residence who had found Brown unresponsive. She was declared dead at the scene.

The GBI, Hoschton Police Department and Jackson County Coroner’s Office are conducting the investigation.

Jim Fullington, special agent in charge of the Athens’ GBI office, said he does have some theories about the case, but is waiting to elaborate until he receives toxicology results, which could take between four and six weeks to come back.

Fullington said on Dec. 29, however, that an autopsy yielded "no indication of foul play or direct physical causes of death."

As of Monday, no one had been charged in the case.

Hoschton Police Chief David Hill said once the toxicology results are received, the next step will be to schedule a meeting involving the Hoschton Police, GBI and district attorney’s office.

Hill, who was out of town on Dec. 27, said Monday that he was grateful for all of the law enforcement agencies that responded to the call, including the GBI, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Braselton Police Department, West Jackson Fire Department and others.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brittane Brown Memorial Fund, c/o Northeast Georgia Bank, P.O. Box 130, Braselton, GA 30517.
