Students awarded in Energy Bowl

POSTED: November 18, 2007 5:04 a.m.

Two area students received honorable mention as finalists in the Energy Bowl Challenge held Nov. 8 by Jackson Electric Membership Corp.

Justin Eckelberry of Flowery Branch High School was first runner-up and Joshua Moncada of West Hall High School was a finalist. All finalists received a Visa gift card, gift bags and Palm Zire Handheld Organizer.

Jackson EMC holds the academic quiz bowl every year, which tests area high school students on their knowledge of energy and other science-related topics. Young competed against students from 17 local high schools.

Everett Young, a junior at Athens Academy, won an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., as the winner. Young received a Visa gift card, Palm Zire Handheld Organizer, a $2,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2007 Washington Youth Tour. Athens Academy also got a $1,000 educational grant.

"Each year, the Energy Bowl attracts a number of outstanding students, and we are honored to play a role in this event," said Randall Pugh, president/CEO of Jackson EMC. "We are committed to supporting educational and science-related programs within Jackson EMC communities."
