Missed opportunities may be Flowery Branch coach Chris Griffin’s message to his Falcons after they lost to Loganville 42-0 Friday night at Falcon Field in a Region 8-AAAAA matchup.

The Falcons kept the game close until late in the first half, the dam breaking behind Loganville’s dominating offensive and defensive lines. The Red Devils controlled both lines of scrimmage, outgaining the home team 394-117. They also doubled the Falcons in time of possession behind their up-tempo, no-huddle spread attack, running 62 plays to the Falcons 45.

The Red Devils (6-1, 3-0) rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns behind Darryl Giles’ 206 yards on 30 carries. Quarterback Cam Perkins completed 15-of-21 passes for 153 yards and two more scores.

Flowery Branch (3-5, 2-2) could only muster 29 yards on the ground and 88 through the air. Falcons quarterback Nick Lance completed four of his first six passes for 36 yards, but the lack of a ground game along with Loganville’s relentless pass rush (five sacks) made him unload the ball much quicker than he wanted, with numerous deep passes just over the out stretched fingertips of Falcons wide receivers.

Flowery Branch converted on only one of 12 third downs and was in third-and-long most of the game. After the hot start, Lance completed four of his next 20 passes to finish 8-for-26 for 88 yards.

The Red Devils came out firing behind Perkins as he spread the ball around to four different receivers on quick completions for 26 yards. Giles did the rest, carrying four times for 26 yards including a 4-yard run on a draw for the first score, putting Loganville up 7-0 just three minutes in.

For most of the first half, the Falcons’ defense bent but didn’t break as Loganville was forced to punt on four straight possessions. The Red Devils finally got on track right before the half, driving 51 yards on an eight-play, four-minute drive in which Giles carried five times for 30 yards capped by a 15-yard touchdown on a sweep to the right side.

Giles’ second touchdown extended the lead to 14-0 with just under a minute remaining in the half.

Two plays after a 55-yard kick return by Trey McIntosh, Red Devil defensive end Mathew Pettit read an inside screen on third-and-long and snagged a Lance pass out of the air, rumbling 50 yards for the score and a 21-0 halftime lead.

The third quarter was more of the same as Perkins completed two passes to Shy Kim for touchdowns on Loganville’s first two possessions of the third quarter. The first was an inside slant for 40 yards, the second an inside screen for 33 yards.

Malik Drayton led the Falcons with 75 yards receiving while Myles Janess led their ground effort with 16 yards.

Flowery Branch plays at Clarke Central next week while Loganville hosts Cedar Shoals.
