3,000 come out for first few days of early voting

Wednesday is the deadline to vote early before the Dec. 2 runoff

POSTED: December 3, 2008 5:00 a.m.

Although the presidential race has been decided, Georgia voters still have several elected official positions to fill in a runoff election set for Dec. 2.

Early voting began Monday and will end Wednesday.

“We’ve had more than 3,000 ballots cast in office,” said Charlotte Sosebee-Hunter, who is the interim Hall County elections supervisor. “We’re still working on our mail-out ballots, but we hope to have those out by this weekend.”

All Georgia voters who participate in the runoff election will help to fill a seat in the U.S. Senate, the state Appeals Court and the Georgia Public Service Commission.

While Hall County doesn’t have any local races that still need to be decided, Lumpkin County has two local positions that will be filled after the runoff results are tallied. Voters will decide who will fill a position on the Dahlonega City Council and the District 1 seat on the Lumpkin County Board of Education.

“As of (Thursday) we have had 496 early voters,” said Cindy Foley, who works for the Lumpkin County election supervisor. “This year, we’ve had a lot more voters than normal — in the November elections and with early voting now.”

Many Georgia voters are taking advantage of mailing in requests for an absentee ballot, but some are leaving off a very important piece of information on their request form — their signature.

“We have had a lot of issues with people not signing their absentee ballot request forms,” Sosebee-Hunter said. “We’ve gotten hundreds, almost a thousand, unsigned requests that we will have to return for a signature.”

Sosebee-Hunter said properly signed absentee ballot request forms must be into her office by Wednesday, or voters will have to vote in office on Dec. 2.

All absentee ballots must be received in the elections office by 7 p.m. Dec. 2.
