Gainesville Mayor Myrtle Figueras recently spoke to third-grade students at Sardis Elementary about her role as mayor. She shared her belief in the importance of reading, education and in having high expectations for personal achievements.

Scott Crain, parent mentor for Hall County schools, was recently awarded the Phil Pickens Parent Mentor Leadership Award at the Parent Mentor Partnership fall conference in Cordele. Presented each year, the Phil Pickens Award acknowledges the hard work and dedication of a special education administrator or parent mentor. The award is named for the late Phil Pickens, former special education director for Georgia and founder of the Georgia Parent Mentor Partnership.

Ann Patterson Luther, daughter of Rhuel D. Patterson of Gainesville, was recently recognized as a distinguished alumna for her contribution in advancing the specialty of otorhinolaryngology and head-neck nursing at Vanderbilt University's School of Nursing. Luther served a two-year term as the national president of Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nursing and played a pivotal role in the development of a national certification exam and the establishment of the Ear, Nose and Throat Nursing Foundation. She has been a clinical nurse specialist/case manager for the Otolaryngology Service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for 20 years.

Gainesville High School senior Claire Kannapel recently had a drawing accepted into the Savannah College of Art & Design Georgia High School Drawing Competition. Of all the entries from Georgia high schools, Claire is one of the 50 students juried into the exhibit. Joe Emery is her art teacher.
