Canadian singer Jennifer Hanson will aim to please music lovers Jan. 16 with her sultry renditions during The Arts Council’s Evenings of Intimate Jazz concert series.

The youngest of seven children, Hanson learned to love 1930s and ’40s era standards at her father’s knee. She began singing those tunes for anyone who would listen around 1972, according to the website, theartscouncil.net.

Nearly 20 years later, Hanson actually got paid to sing. Her repertoire runs the gamut from the jazz standard songbook and torchy heartbreakers, to a large selection of well-loved World War II songs. She also can break out songs from Motown, blues, country and pop. But her first CD, “Something Cool,” won a 1999 Prairie Music Award (Canada) for best jazz recording.

Hanson also is one of the few singers in the Southeast who sings extensively in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. She also knows the anthems of at least 10 countries.

The Jennifer Hanson Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. at 331 Spring St. SW in Gainesville. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $30 per person or $125 for the series of jazz concerts. For more information, visit www.theartscouncil.net.
