Two Hall County schools earn state honors

POSTED: November 23, 2008 5:00 a.m.

Two Hall County schools are among more than 275 Georgia public schools recognized Wednesday by Gov. Sonny Perdue and state Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox for improvement and achievement during the 2007-2008 school year.

The schools are being recognized under Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System, which awards schools based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress status.

Gainesville High School is one of just eight schools in the state to be recognized both for greatest gains and highest performance. The school was given a gold award for greatest gains and a silver award for highest performance.

North Hall High School received a gold award for highest performance.

"These awards are just one way to say ‘thank you’ and ‘great job’ to the principals, teachers, parents and students at these schools," Cox said. "This type of achievement and improvement doesn’t happen unless everyone is focused on the goal of providing a quality education to every student."

The awards are being announced as part of the release of the 2007-2008 K-12 Public Schools Report Card. The recognized schools will receive a letter and a banner announcing the award.

"Gov. Perdue and I are pleased to recognize schools that the data shows are getting great results," said Jennifer Rippner Buck, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. "Congratulations to the staff and students at these 279 schools that are leading the state in student achievement and student improvement."

The schools are awarded on four levels — platinum, gold, silver and bronze — in two categories. Greatest gains awards were given to schools that showed the greatest improvement in scores on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests or the Georgia High School Graduation Tests. Highest performance awards were given to schools that demonstrated the highest achievement on the CRCT or GHSGT.
