Hall hires Charley Nix as county administrator

POSTED: November 17, 2008 5:00 a.m.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to name Charley Nix county administrator at its board meeting Thursday.

Nix has been serving as interim county administrator since July 1, following former administrator Jim Shuler’s retirement.

Commissioner Bobby Banks said after observing Nix in the position, he was confident he was the man for the job.

"When we first started looking, I was all in favor of going nationwide for a search," Banks said. "But after talking to probably seven or eight department heads, they were all satisfied with Charley."

Commissioner Billy Powell said he, too, had heard positive feedback from employees that encouraged him to support Nix.

"I was extremely interested in ensuring the right decision be made concerning a permanent county administrator because of the magnitude of the decision," Powell said. "I received numerous favorable remarks of improved communication, morale and progress since Charley has been in office."

Nix, who previously served as the director of human resources for the county, said he was honored to get a unanimous vote.

"To get a five-to-zero vote to me was an awfully desirable thing," Nix said.

Though he did not initially intend on being the administrator permanently, he has grown into the job and is excited about taking it on.

"My objectives were to just bridge the gap," Nix said. "But to see all the issues and challenges, it kind of peaked my desire."

Nix said he is aware he is stepping in at a hard time for the county but thinks his experience as a leader in human resources will be beneficial.

"I like challenges," Nix said.

Hall County interviewed four people. James "Butch" Sanders, former city administrator for Dalton, was the other finalist for the position.
