Man found guilty of child molestation

POSTED: November 11, 2008 5:00 a.m.

More than seven years after molesting a 5-year-old boy in a trailer off Athens Highway, a Gainesville man was found guilty of aggravated child molestation Friday in Hall County Superior Court.

The victim of Jesus Camacho Chavez did not confide the molestation with Gwinnett County school officials until about three years after the 2001 date of the crime, Assistant District Attorney Juliet Aldridge said. Gwinnett social services contacted the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and arrest warrants were taken out for Chavez in 2005, but it took authorities another two years to locate the transient day laborer.

Chavez, 52, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Judge C. Andrew Fuller deferred sentencing to a later date.

A jury of seven men and five women spent a little more than three hours deliberating the case. The jury acquitted Chavez on three felony counts related to accusations from the victim’s brother that he, too, had been molested.

During the weeklong trial, jurors watched videotaped interviews with both boys and heard live testimony from the victim, now 13.

Chavez did not testify.

Chavez and his daughter had lived for a time with the two boys and their father in a shared trailer. The molestation occurred a few months after he moved out and was visiting the father, according to court testimony.

Chavez, who has been in custody since last year, remains jailed pending sentencing. Aldridge told Fuller she would have victim impact statements for the judge to consider.
