Go-cart driver dies at Road Atlanta

POSTED: November 10, 2007 5:05 a.m.

A go-cart driver died Sunday in an accident at Road Atlanta.

Keith Wendell Lorentzen, of Weston, Conn., died Sunday afternoon at Road Atlanta in a race sponsored by the World Karting Association.

He was attempting to avoid a crash on the track when he lost control of his vehicle and overturned around 2:15 p.m., according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Medical personnel working at the track treated Lorentzen, and he was transported to Barrow Regional Medical Center in Winder, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident appeared accidental and no foul play was suspected.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Traffic Enforcement Unit, is investigating.

Randy Kugler, president of the World Karting Association, said Lorentzen, who was recently residing in Nashville, Tenn., was a regular in the carting series.

"He traveled the circuit and raced for a few years," Kugler said. "He was an experienced racer."

Kugler said Lorentzen had been participating in an eight-race series that spanned the east coast from New Hampshire to Florida.

The Road Atlanta race was the last in the series.
