Fresh fruit, a vanilla ice cream base and local fresh milk is all it takes to make a winning homemade ice cream.

After four weeks of close competition, Jaemor Farms’ recipe came away as the victor in The Times Homemade Ice Cream Challenge.

With 45 percent of the vote, Jaemor beat three other regional ice cream shops: Mountain Fresh Creamery in Clermont, La Mejor de Michoacán in Gainesville and Homemade Ice Cream Gifts and More in Helen. Each shop makes its own version of homemade ice cream.

“We had some stiff competition,” Jaemor Farms store manager Judah Echols said. “I’ve had Mountain Fresh Creamery and the other place (Le Mejor de Michoacán). Their vanilla ice cream is great.”

Echols, who makes the ice cream for the farm, said Jaemor gets a lot of traffic to its store, which lends to ice cream sales. Therefore, he said he hoped it had a chance to win, but knew the race would be close.

“I’m thrilled to be able to pull out a win,” he said. “It’s wonderful.”

Jaemor Farms uses fresh peaches and strawberries along with Mountain Fresh Creamery’s milk. On the flip side, the Clermont-based creamery uses its fresh milk and Jaemor Farms’ fruit. The difference between the two frozen desserts is in the base.

But it apparently made all the difference. Jaemor Farms beat Mountain Fresh Creamery by 14 votes in the contest.

“I just got done tasting a batch a few minutes ago,” Echols said. “We are proud of our product, and when you add fresh peaches and strawberries, it’s got to be the best.”

Echols noted that the farm’s experience with the product may have helped it develop the winning formula.

“We’ve been making ice cream longer than some,” he said. “We started making it here 10 or 12 years ago.”

Regular customers come in frequently for ice cream, produce and other goods, and employees at Jaemor Farms mentioned the contest while promoting it online.

“We mentioned (the contest) on our Facebook page,” Echols said. “One of the girls mentioned to customers to vote for us.”

Plus, each vendor had its own following, but not as large as Jaemor. La Mejor de Michoacán finished in third place, followed by Homemade Ice Cream Gifts and More in fourth.

For readers in the area, however, not many places seem to beat Jaemor’s fresh frozen confection.

“I think we have some great customers (who) come in here,” Echols said. “And for people to take time out of their schedule and vote for us, we have most wonderful customers in the world here in North Georgia.”
