Chestatee High School vandalized

POSTED: August 15, 2014 11:40 p.m.

Chestatee High School was hit with graffiti Thursday night, but it is not clear if the graffiti was related to the recent controversy about prayer at the school.

Gordon Higgins, spokesman for the Hall County School District, confirmed that there was some graffiti placed Thursday night near the school’s stadium, but said he could not provide any further details.

Deputy Nicole Bailes, public information officer for the Hall County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed that a deputy responded to a call at the school Thursday night and provided an incident report showing that there was property damage on the campus.

“I can confirm with you that the Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a vandalism that occurred on the property of Chestatee High School this morning,” Bailes said Friday in an e-mail. “The Sheriff’s Office takes these matters very seriously and we are working very closely with the Chestatee school administrators regarding this matter.”
She said further information could not be provided.

The school has been at the center of a controversy since Tuesday, when the American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center sent a letter to the school alleging illegal religious activity by coaches before games and on official team paperwork.
