Gainesville police have charged a Gainesville man in the shooting of two women Friday.

Antwan Xavier Earls, 24, was arrested Friday after the incident. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Additional charges may be forthcoming, Gainesville Police Department spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said in a news release.

Earls was the lone gunman, the news release said.

After she heard the sound of six gunshots Friday afternoon, Irene Lipscomb, 39, rushed outside in the Atlanta Street Apartments in Gainesville to see what had happened.

What she found were two female shooting victims on the ground. A male suspect was arrested a short time later.

“By the time we ran out, we could see them on the ground,” she said.

The women were rushed by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the upper torso, one of the injuries listed as critical. As of Friday night, they had not been identified.

Gainesville police responded to the incident just before 3 p.m. in the 200 block of Atlanta Street behind First Congregational Holiness Church. When they arrived, the victims were on the ground outside the Atlanta Street Apartments surrounded by Lipscomb and nearby residents.

“Due to the large crowd, that does give a large number of individuals to speak to,” Holbrook said.

A short time later, officers located the suspect on the corner of High and Grove streets. The man was shirtless with blood on his boxers and a possible cut on his right forearm. He was taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. without incident, Holbrook said.

Travis Thompson, 33, a relative of one of the victims, hurried to the scene when he heard of the shootting.

“It’s crazy,” he said. “It happened so quick.”
